Melissa Stockwell- She is a war veteran with the U.S. Army, Purple Heart recipient, a paralympian, paratriathlete, and an above the knee amputee. She lost her leg in 2004 due to a roadside bomb that went off during a convoy. In 2008 during the Paralympics Games she became the 100 meter butterfly and 100 meter freestyle record holder. She also became the face of the Hartford U.S. Paralympics Partnership ad campaign. The use of a prosthetic leg has helped her to succeed in triathlons.
Jim MacLaren- He was hit by a bus on his motorcycle and his left leg below the knee had to be amputated. Once he was well enough he took up swimming and learned how to run on a prosthetic leg. Later on he competed in the New York City Marathon and the Ironman triathlon. He became a motivational speaker and life coach when another accident left him paralyzed.
Jeremy Sicile-Kira: He is severely autistic and unable to speak, but by using a letter board to communicate he graduated from Torrey Pines High School with a 3.5 GPA. He was invited to speak at graduation and he delivered his speech through voice-assisted technology that verbalized his written speech. Through the help of these things he even completed the same coursework as his classmates.
